A contributor to The American Prospect Online and Guardian America's Comment Is Free site, Stan's work has also appeared in The New Republic, the Village Voice, The Nation, The Advocate, Salon.com, the Washington Blade and Mother Jones magazine, as well as on the op-ed pages of the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Daily News. She began her media career at Ms. magazine, where she served both on staff and as a contributing editor.

Along the way, Stan developed expertise in covering the intersection of religion and politics, in addition to lifelong specialties in women's issues and pop culture. Her Mother Jones cover story on the religious right is considered by many to be a definitive primer on the movement; a special 10,000-copy reprint sold out its print run.

Those who graduated college with women's studies majors are familiar with Stan's book, Debating Sexual Correctness, in which the author details the porn wars, date rape controversy and theory on sexual harassment that helped define the modern feminist movement.

Stan has also served as a contributing writer to Mother Jones, and Washington correspondent for Working Woman.

Outside of the office, Stan indulges an array of interests, with music taking center stage. She is in the midst of planning a second career as a lounge-singing ukulele-player.

Adele M. Stan is executive editor of The Media Consortium syndicated reporting project and authors the blog, AddieStan.

Palin on Today: Not Goin' Anywhere

14 Comments | Posted November 11, 2008 | 10:22 AM (EST)

There a lot of things one can say about Sarah Palin, but this one cannot be disputed: by one measure, at least, she is true to her word. Sarah Palin is not going anywhere.

That, you'll recall, is what the Alaska governor and former vice presidential candidate...

Palin Wows 'Em in York

It's easy to make fun of a vice presidential candidate who can't seem to tell you what periodicals she reads, what Supreme Court cases she disagrees with, or who thinks the First Amendment to the Constitution assures her the right to not be criticized. But today, after seeing Sarah Palin...

Palin's Pal: A Feminist of Her Own

117 Comments | Posted October 29, 2008 | 04:16 AM (EST)

Can you be a supporter of Sarah Palin and still be a feminist? Well, I guess you could call yourself a feminist -- that is, if you think that, as a woman, you still have rights equal to those of a man when:

* You do not have the right...

The Palin Chronicles: Wedge-Setting 101

7 Comments | Posted October 2, 2008 | 05:29 PM (EST)

While at first she seemed a formidable force, Sarah Palin, in recent days, has offered her critics the delight of feeling blithely superior as she stammered her way through questions put to her by two network news anchors. But while liberals and progressives revel in the riches of embarrassment that...

Sarah Palin: Our First Woman President?

Posted September 4, 2008 | 02:38 AM (EST)

I've long harbored a suspicion I dared not speak until now: that the first woman president will be a Republican. Tonight's performance by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin brings that possibility a step closer to reality.

Forget rebuttal on the substance of her acceptance speech before the Republican National Convention...

What the Oprah-Obama Alliance Really Means

Posted August 28, 2008 | 08:41 PM (EST)

DENVER--In the generic meeting-rooms of the Colorado Convention Center, a revolution is taking place in the Democratic Party. The people of faith have arrived.

Every day has seen a panel or gathering or both of religious and spiritual leaders, some gathered together by Joshua DuBois, the Obama campaign's director...

Michelle Obama: Hillary Made Barack a Better Candidate

Posted August 28, 2008 | 05:57 PM (EST)

DENVER--Today's meeting of the Democratic Women's Caucus featured a surprise guest: Michelle Obama.

The potential first lady is making a concerted effort, it seems, to reach out to the different women's constituency groups in the Democratic party, including those closely allied with Hillary Clinton. (Earlier this week, Michelle Obama spoke...

Michelle Obama: So 21st Century

Posted August 26, 2008 | 01:36 AM (EST)

DENVER -- Back in the dreary days just before the New Hampshire primary, an immigration activist had this to say about Barack Obama's candidacy and racial politics in America: the real test of the nation's evolution on race in the presidential race come when Americans wake up and realize that...

Careful, Joe! "Smart Woman" Jokes a Dicey Game

Posted August 23, 2008 | 04:49 PM (EST)

To begin with, let me say that Joe Biden was not my first choice for the number-two spot on the Democrats' ticket. First, he's not a woman. Second, he didn't do the job when it was his turn to grill the two most dangerous Supreme Court nominees (now justices) in...

Building a Green Economy

We all say we want to go green, but do we all see the same kinds of change when we imagine an eco-friendly economy?

In Denver, Colo., Tom Plant, director of the Governor's Energy Office, is practically giddy. It's just days before the Democratic National Convention kicks off in...

Calm yourselves, mes amis! Yes, yes, I understand how exciting all this veep stuff is, and how thrilling it would be to see the religious right-wing beside itself with the selection of a pro-choice vice presidential candidate by John McCain, the Republican heir apparent. I so hate to bust...

How Soon They Forget: Megachurchgoers See No Evil In McCain

Posted August 17, 2008 | 01:07 PM (EST)

At the megachurch known as Saddleback, Barack Obama and John McCain last night fielded questions from the popular right-leaning pastor, Rick Warren. The candidates were presented in serial one-on-one Q-and-A sessions (transcript) with the evangelical preacher, addressing topics ranging from leadership to human rights for fetuses to the nature...

Not a Good Sunday for Women

In another veepstakes edition of "Meet the Press," a roundtable composed of two men and two women offered no bets by anybody on a woman vice presidential candidate. PBS's Judy Woodruff said Barack Obama's pick would be either Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine or Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh. NBC's Andrea...

The Race Race

When Barack Obama told Tom Brokaw last Sunday that his poll numbers reflected the fact that he didn't "look like previous commanders-in-chief," I took a deep breath. This was different.

In the past, Obama has sought to avoid addressing the impact of his race on the presidential contest,...

McCain Ad a "Dumb Blonde" Joke

Make that a "slutty dumb blonde" joke.

Much has been written about John McCain's latest television ad -- the one that compares Barack Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton -- in the less-than- 24 hours since it was unveiled. (Click here for Greg Sargent's assessment.) But...

Time to Make Art

For years I've been advocating, fulminating, pontificating -- okay, ranting -- that until the political folks welcomed artists into full participation in the progressive movement, there would really be no movement. (Think about it: What do we remember about the 1960s in our cellular memory? The music, man. The poetry,...
