Was the convention director asleep? For the first few minutes of the big McCain speech, the candidate looked like an entry in Stephen Colbert's "Make John McCain Exciting Green Screen Challenge!"

I submit to you, Sen. Lieberman, that you were punished yesterday more than you realize. Stick with me on this. I'll explain: it never fully occurred to me how Obama would use his strengths in a position of leadership. Until this week.

In addition to preemptive arrests, the police are responding aggressively to the presence of protesters. New video is appearing on YouTube of protesters being tear-gassed by the police.

There's little appetite now to dredge up and rehash the nightmare, but without better exposure of what happened at the RNC in St. Paul, the "war on dissent" risks repeating itself in the future.
Jacob Heilbrunn, 09.04.2008
Most of McCain's speech was a snooze, delivered in the tone of a kindly old uncle reminiscing about World War II before fretting about how how those pesky Russians are stirring up trouble again.

According to Vanity Fair, the outfit Cindy McCain wore Tuesday night cost a whooping $313,100. The McCains have received $313,413 thanks to George Bush's tax cut.

Walking through the Xcel Energy Center, I encountered a group of African-American Republicans, and asked them for their take on the historic nature of Barack Obama's nomination. Check it out:

As imperfect and disorganized as Democrats may be, I am a part of a group of people who wants us to move forward to something greater, no matter how unattainable perfection is.

In a breathtakingly puzzling move, John McCain showed terrible judgment by selecting first term Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate. ...

Remember when Republicans used to favor merit as the basis for advancement? They used to say that the United States should be a meritocracy.
John Ridley, 09.03.2008
If you're a Democrat and you make a VP pick without fully vetting the individual you're "reckless." A Republican who doesn't fully vet is a "maverick."
Nora Ephron, 09.04.2008
I forget how white Republicans are, and mean-spirited, and thin-lipped. I watch them and I think, is anyone buying this? Does anyone think we're better off today? That we're "winning" the war? Does anyone really think that executive experience trumps wisdom and intellect?
Giles Slade, 09.02.2008
In the run-up to the federal election, signs of the republican's self-confidence are, to paraphrase Pete Townsend, 'f-f-f-fading away'.
But let me re...

The McCain campaign and the Bush White House negotiated terms that unfolded as a script over the past several days, several sources told me.

In a particularly demeaning to women part of his book, Hagee wrote: "Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick."

"new-clear" I thought it was a joke. Now, I will go cry because half of America thinks she isn't that bad of a choice.
What a great speech. Folks on this site are nuts if you truley think Obama is the answer. This has nothing to do with the color of his skin, rather he's a complete socialist and the most liberal member of the senate in 2007. The one thing this country cannot afford is even bigger govt. than what Bush has grown it too and just because McCain/Palin are Reps doesn't mean we'll see more of the same. Get off that kick and wake up folks.
People who insist, " This has nothing to do with the color of his skin" when nobody said it did are telling on themselves.
